Bri's Fresh Bakes is known around Madison, WI for incredible, beautiful pastries, the kind of baked goods where the craftsmanship is obvious in every layer. Bri's talent as a baker set the bar high, and I wanted the food photography to match it. The goal was imagery that didn't just document the pastries, but genuinely showed off the skill behind them.
The Challenge
Croissants and pastries are deceptively hard to photograph well.
Their beauty is in the details. The flaky, paper-thin layers, the golden edges, the contrast between crisp exterior and soft interior, and none of that comes through in a standard, straight on shot. I wanted to go further and capture true macro detail, getting close enough that every layer was visible, without losing the warmth and appetite appeal that makes food photography work.
The real challenge was finding the right spot on each pastry. Macro shots are unforgiving. A fraction of an inch in either direction can be the difference between a shot that shows off gorgeous lamination and one that just looks like a blurry crumb. It took a lot of testing, repositioning, and patience to find the angles where each pastry's layers actually told a story.
The Result
The final images capture Bri's Fresh Bakes pastries in a way that goes beyond a typical bakery photo. You can practically feel the crisp, flaky layers and the softness underneath. This is exactly the kind of food photography I love creating. Work that doesn't just show a product, but makes people feel something before they've even taken a bite.
